Frequently Asked Questions
What sources of information are used to support this site?
This site blends information materials the MMA has developed, information from programs we sponsor or support and references information from third party web sites and organizations which have expertise in our interested areas.  Wherever we have used information or materials from another site, we have footnoted and referenced that site so that visitors here can find that information at its source.

What is the MMA?
The core purpose of the Mahwah Municipal Alliance, or MMA, is to help the youth of Mahwah become great decision makers.  To meet this purpose, the MMA has been formed as an organization of community volunteers and local police focusing efforts in three major strategic areas.  These include programs and projects related to Personal Courage, Physical and Social Development and General Safety; The Mahwah Municipal Alliance also actively supports targeted community outreach efforts.

How long has the MMA been operating?
The Mahwah Municipal Alliance was established in 1985 as the Mahwah DARE Alliance under the leadership of then Mahwah Police Chief Samuel Alderisio.  Chief Alderiso’s vision was to bring D.A.R.E. (a nationally recognized program centered on Drug Abuse Resistance Education) into Grades 5, 7 and 10 by using trained, experienced police officers.  Today, the Mahwah D.A.R.E. Program is a staple of Mahwah’s public school curriculum.   In August 2006, Chief James Batelli restructured the Alliance to bring broader community involvement.  As a result, it is now known as the Mahwah Municipal Alliance, administered by a refreshed Board focused on a new MMA core purpose:  to help the youth of Mahwah become great decision makers.
Currently, the MMA works to achieve this purpose by finding ways to inspire children to exercise personal courage, be physically active and be attentive to general safety.

I thought the Mahwah Municipal Alliance was just D.A.R.E.?

DARE was the original program supported by the MMA.  Presently, the MMA supports a wide range of programs and activities under three strategic areas:Personal Courage, Physical and Social Development and General Safety;

Who runs the organization?
The MMA is administered by a Board of Directors who oversee fundraising, programs support and governance and relations with local police, township officials and the Bergen County Municipal Alliance.

Is MMA a not for-profit organization?
Yes, the MMA is a non-profit organization.  Accordingly, all donations made to the MMA are tax deductible.
