| Programs for Personal Courage |
The MMA wants to enhance children's ability to be personally courageous
when confronted with tough, peer based pressure.
Youth driven peer pressure is not new; as parents we can all recall situations
where a group interaction became difficult or uncomfortable. Today’s children
have more opportunities to encounter those situations. While bullying, under-
age drinking or drug use have always confronted us, and continue to be a
challenge, today our children face new threats. Mobile cell phones, social networking sites, and the speed of the internet may confront children with
internet abuse or cyber bullying. A gang lifestyle is frequently misrepresented
in popular culture.
It takes courage and confidence to resolve these situations, positively.
The MMA focuses on supporting programs that teach skills children need to face tough social situations with courage and confidence and to make great decisions; decisions that reduce their chances of being hurt or damaged or making poor lifestyle choices.
We aspire to find and support programs that target the tough situations posed by drug and alcohol abuse, the internet, bullying, and gangs or new threats that may emerge and for which children and adults need skills and resources.
