Program Description
The Mahwah Youth Leadership Academy, introduced in 2007, was designed as a follow-on program for the highly popular Junior Police Academy and is taught and run by the Mahwah Police Department. The 4 day effort focuses on leadership.
What the Mahwah Youth Leadership Academy Does
The Mahwah Youth Leadership Academy utilizes a variety of leadership teaching techniques. These include classroom teaching, written homework assignments, and group discussions. The essential focus is to teach leadership as a critical life skill that can be used to successfully confront many situations.
A significant amount of time is used in challenging physical situations involving both individual performance and team performance. These include the Precious Cargo Challenge, theStormy Seas Exercise and the Rock Wall Climbing Challenge as well as The Apprentice Challenge, the Puzzle Challenge, the Landmine Challenge, the Egg Freefall Challenge and the Safe Passage Ball Challenge. Trips to Independence Hall –Independence Hall in Philadelphia, a tour of the USS New Jersey and visits to the NJ Aquarium, Liberty Bell Center and the Betsy Ross House are included to illustrate places where great leadership was displayed. A formal graduation ceremony is held at the Bandshell and Great Lawn at Ramapo College of New Jersey.
Mahwah Youth Leadership Academy Target Audience
The Mahwah Youth Leadership Academy is targeted at students entering the7th grade and who have completed the first year of the Mahwah D.A.R.E Program and successfully completed The Mahwah Junior Police Academy. Approximately, 100 children participated in the 2007 program.
Participant Cost
The program requires a $125 fee for each participant.
