MMA Bicycle Safety

Bikehelmet ImageProgram Description
This past year at Mahwah Day, the MMA distributed, free, approximately 1,000 helmets

What Bicycle Helmet Program Does
The program reminds both children and adults that helmets help prevent injury and that is a great decision to wear one.   Though we call them bicycle helmets, the reality is that any activity that involves motion, bicycle, skateboard, roller blades, should use a helmet.

According to the Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute, a bicycle helmet reduces the risk of serious head and brain injury by 85%. More than 70,000 persons need hospital emergency room treatment each year for injuries related to skateboarding according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

According to the Mayo Clinic, the rules for wearing a bicycle helmet are the same for kids and adults, too. Wear the helmet flat on the top of your head. The helmet should cover the top of your forehead without tilting forward or backward.  Fasten the chin strap just below your chin. If the bicycle helmet doesn't feel snug, use the foam sizing pads that came with the helmet to get a better fit. The helmet shouldn't rock from front to back or side to side.

The Bicycle Helmet Target Audience
In Mahwah, the D.A.R.E. core curriculum begins in the 5th grade at Joyce Kilmer School, taught once per week by Mahwah D.A.R.E officers.  The curriculum is followed up in the 7th grade at the Ramapo Ridge Middle School, as part of the students’ Health classes, again for a 10 week period.  A third wave of instruction is targeted at the 10th grade, at Mahwah High School, incorporated into the Driver’s Education class.

Participant Cost
The program is free to all students.
